School of Industrial and Graphic Design

The School of Industrial and Graphic Design (SIGD) houses two traditional undergraduate degree programs and one minor: Bachelor of Industrial Design, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and a minor in Industrial and Graphic Design Processes.

Graphic Design was first accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) in 1945 making Auburn University one of the Charter Members of NASAD. In 1993, the Auburn Industrial Design program became the first Industrial Design program to be accredited by NASAD in the south. SIGD houses the only NASAD accredited Industrial and Graphic Design BFA programs within the state of Alabama. Our award-winning faculty are highly motivated and collaborate regularly with industry and other partners to bring real-world projects into the classroom.

The studio is an environment where students are pretty much operating one on one with the faculty. And they get a lot more individual critique time with the faculty in a studio environment and in a Bachelor of Fine Arts environment, which emphasizes a studio is the vehicle to basically provide the disciplinary information.

Sponsor studio is an opportunity for students to get real world experience while being in the classroom context. These clients bring real world problems to our students and they will have real tangible outcomes. They will be put into market within 1-3 years. These sponsored projects provide students tangible real world experience. That way when they step into the profession, they're ready to go.

Our user experience lab has all kinds of tools that the students can use. There's computers in there, where they could use the animation software. They could use the eye tracking software for user testing, or usability, or for web design, and interactive media. The Auburn Graphic Design Juried Student Show is an exhibit that we have annually, and we invite an distinguished juror to come, and review the student work and give awards. Design interaction is an annual celebration of outstanding design through presentations by distinguished speakers. Recent speakers have been from Disney, IBM, Google and Coca Cola.

Future studio is in Mobile. We go there every other week for half of the week, and we work with our clients very closely. And we have our own studio space that is on the third floor of an art museum. Right now we're working on Mardi Gras in Mobile.
