School of Industrial and Graphic Design

The School of Industrial and Graphic Design (SIGD) houses two traditional undergraduate degree programs and one minor: Bachelor of Industrial Design, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and a minor in Industrial and Graphic Design Processes.

Graphic Design was first accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) in 1945 making Auburn University one of the Charter Members of NASAD. In 1993, the Auburn Industrial Design program became the first Industrial Design program to be accredited by NASAD in the south. SIGD houses the only NASAD accredited Industrial and Graphic Design BFA programs within the state of Alabama. Our award-winning faculty are highly motivated and collaborate regularly with industry and other partners to bring real-world projects into the classroom.

The Auburn University's design program have over 40 years of history of collaborating with industry sponsors.

The engagement that students have with the professionals that come from the companies for sponsor Studios is a little bit different than engaging with a professor or their cohort. There's a little bit more pressure, and they learn a lot from those industry sponsors and also this industry partners can help us to create internship opportunities. Many of them hire many of our students. Senior Project is a very exciting course. This is where students are able to apply everything that they've learned and propose a project that they would like to work with for an entire semester.

And at the beginning of the semester, they will present their design brief or proposal to a group of graphic design faculty members, and then they can work with anywhere between three to five graphic design professors for the entire semester, and then at the end, there's an exhibit to show their work. The Kaleidoscope student show is a show that we have the end of the year where all the students graphic and industrial design put their work into a show at the end of the year. So it's all the work that they've done throughout the semester, and it's on display for family and friends to come in, but also people in the industry to come in and see what the students have been doing and what they've been up to, whether that's from a sponsored studio or potential employers, to come in and look at the students work.
