    Architecture

For the last decade, our NAAB accredited Bachelor of Architecture program has been ranked in the top twenty architecture programs nationally by DesignIntelligence. Established in 1907, our program is one of the first in the nation, and the first in the South. Auburn Architecture teaches design and planning, creativity, social responsibility, historical perspective, technical competence, and global environmental consciousness. We have a strong reputation for the abilities of our graduates and the quality of our faculty. With the student-to-professor ratio of 16-to-1, students have individualized attention in studios while in the setting of a large university. With the program’s experiential learning approach allowing students to apply their education toward solving real-world problems, this results in a comprehensive portfolio of their designs and creations to present to potential employers.

Our program is unique in that students do not need to submit a portfolio for admission to Auburn as a Pre-Architecture student. Students compete for their spot in the Professional Architecture curriculum through coursework taken in their first three semesters of college. Because of this, no design background is needed as an incoming student. Pre-Architecture students will be taught design principles and concepts through project-based learning and are selected for the professional program based on their performance on the projects completed in the first-year curriculum.

The Architecture program at Auburn offers many programs unique to the college experience, from experiential learning to study abroad. In their 3rd and/or 5th year, students have the opportunity for the Rural Studio and Urban Studio. Students seeking to expand their viewpoints and connect with critical issues of the world have the opportunity to Study Abroad. Some previous Study Abroad trips have been to Rome, Scandinavia, and Japan.

The program was established in 1907 it was one of the first programs in the southeast. Received its initial accreditation in 1945 it is a five year professional program, so it leads to path towards licensure upon graduation

During our first year, we actually start by hand, and a lot of that is hand drawing and modeling, which I found super beneficial, especially coming out of high school, as that really benefited my ability to learn how to design and have that design brain thinking. Transitioning from first year to second year is really when we get into the program and get into the nitty gritty of maybe some digital programs, but we're still keeping that hand drawing, hand modeling and learning all the way through until graduation

In your third and fifth year at Auburn in our bachelor's program, you have the opportunity to leave campus, and we encourage you to do so. So you can go out in the world. You can travel abroad, to Kyoto in Japan, to the Scandinavian countries, or to Barcelona, Spain. You can visit our Rural Studio in Hale County, our urban studio in Birmingham, Alabama. And within each individual studio, there are various field trips if you decide that you want to stay on campus

In design studios, you're going to present your work to faculty, to invited external reviewers, typically practicing architects or educators, where you will describe your process, describe your intention for a particular project and get feedback. It's important to be able to prepare public defense of your work, of your ideas.

I personally love this experience because it's helped me in public speaking, but also in presenting my design ideas to people that might not be from Auburn and can help me and critique me too, so I can bring that design to the next project.

We continuously hear from our partners in industry that our graduates are highly sought after because of their balance of technical skills with their creativity and also their ability to kind of enter into a critical dialog about the work. I hear time and time again from colleagues when they have a student from Auburn in their office that they are very glad that they do they bring a specific mix of talents to the table.
