    Research Commons

The CADC Research Commons has design studio, presentation and collaborative work environments that support research and research-centered undergraduate and graduate coursework.

The studio, alcove and seminar spaces are available to all programs in the CADC depending on each semester’s needs. The conference room and offices provide one central location for collaboration for our college. On campus, our college is spread out in three different buildings; having a common conference space in the college is beneficial for when we are collaborating on college-wide initiatives and goals. We also have full-time college staff in the space serving in communications, research and grants.

The Commons provides space for all faculty completing research to have a dedicated area to work.

The 4,000 square foot CADC Research Shop provides support for the college’s expanding research activities. The Research Shop includes equipment devoted to research in cross-laminated timber (CLT) and other mass timber construction systems. The CADC is working closely with industry partners and faculty from multiple other colleges to explore opportunities for expanding the use of advanced wood building systems. The CADC Research Shop also includes a streaming table to support the landscape architecture program’s research into coastal ecologies and landscape infrastructure.

Welcome to the CADC Research Commons. This is a terrific space for our college. It gives us terrific teaching space, space for research to happen. It's also a great space for our staff, teams devoted to research support and communications. Let's go take a look.

One of the great things about the space here at the research Commons is the teaching and learning environment that it helps us create. So here we have an example of our studio space, like all of our teaching spaces here in the CADC, this is built around collaboration. Students have their individual workspaces. We have a presentation space where students can present to each other and to their faculty, and here we have a seminar space where students can gather with their teachers for more seminar style learning. One of the hallmarks of our teaching here in the CADC is working with outside partners. It's really terrific to have this space here at the research commons, because it's easy for those partners to get to park, come on inside the building and work with our students and faculty.

The CADC is a growing College, and we're spread out over three buildings on the main campus. Another great thing about Commons is it gives us a space where all the disciplines in the CADC can come together and collaborate. Here we're in another space at the research Commons. Research in the CADC is growing by leaps and bounds. The Commons gives us the type of flexible space that we need to support that work. The space could also be set up as a design studio, and it can support workspace for the research teams working on externally funded projects. For our final stop, we're here in the CADC Research shop. This facility gives us the critical space our faculty teams need to advance their research projects. This includes spaces like our mass timber shop, which will include a full scale CLT press, spaces like our digital prototyping lab, where our faculty can use 3d printers and similar tools to do large scale mock ups of their designs and spaces like this, our stream table lab where our landscape research teams can use the stream table to study the way that water systems and land forms interact.
